My Handmade Apron

When planning for the Fiskateer Garden Party at CHA, the other leads and I decided that we would wear aprons.  I thought that we decided that each of us were going to make our own apron using a fabric that would reflect our personalities and still go with the garden theme.   Imagine my surprise when I got to CHA and discovered that I was the only one who thought we had to make our own apron and that the other leads let someone else make their aprons for them. (Even though that would have been a huge time saver, I ended up being glad that I misunderstood and made my apron myself.)

I think all the aprons looked Fisk-a-Fabulous!  But of course I liked mine best, being handmade by me and all. ;)

I made mine the day before we left without a pattern; this apron was designed in my mind and was surprisingly so easy.  The main panel is orange polka dot with a lime green trim around the waist to tie the apron.  But the real beauty is the pleat along the bottom.

The pleat is just short of 5″ long and folded into approximately 1″ pleats.  I folded the pleats and pinned each one.  When I got it just the way I wanted it, I ran a hot iron over it to give the pleats a nice crisp look.  Ironing really helped make the sewing much easier.  Another tip, sew with the pleats so that as You are sewing, the sewing machine is going with the pleat and not against it.  This helped keep the pleats from folding back against the sewing machine.

When we got to CHA I decided that my apron was a couple of inches too long.  I wore it at the garden party and everyone commented on the beautiful pleats, but still I felt I needed to alter it.

When we got to the booth on Sunday, we were surprised with flair buttons.  The crafter in me saw an altering opportunity. I shorted my apron by folding it and used these buttons to ‘pin’ it up.  Now my apron was the perfect length and I love how it looked!

Of course yours was fabulous since it was all handmade by your own little hands. You girls all looked like little Fisk-a-domestic divas.
