The Legend of the Christmas Spider

I received a very thoughtful, perfectly timed gift from Fiskateer Tona #4437 today.  I say perfectly timed because just last night, Emily spotted a spider in our Christmas tree.  Being the girly-girl that she is, she was scared.  I am not afraid of insects (if there is a bee in the house, everyone calls me) and I told Emily that the spider was just looking at the pretty Christmas tree lights.  She reluctantly believed me.

So today, I received from Tona The Legend of the Christmas Spider.

She also made an orange and green spider that is definitely a Fiskateer.

Isn’t it adorable?!?  So creative.  I just love it.  I think it needs a name.  Any suggestions?

I think it’s a very cute story and look forward to reading it to Emily when she gets home later.  And I’m going to let her help me find the perfect spot for our Fisk-a-spider.

Thank You, Tona.

Wow what a great legend - now the spiders Tona has been making make sense.
Perhaps we could ask for a Tona-tutorial.

I’d never heard of the Christmas Spider before, but what a lovely story. I think this little guy should be called Spida-teer.

Tona needs to give us all lessons on spider making.

Thank you for sharing Tona’s cute spider, Kelly Jo. I want a tutorial, too. How about Arach- na-teer? (Kind of combining Arachnid with a random act of kindness and the Fiskateers?)

Great story and awesome spider! It almost convinces me to put up a tree this year, but not quite. One tree plus five kittens equals utter chaos…LOL

We have a little spider for our tree. I’ve heard a variation on the story in which the family could not afford to decorate the tree after they got it, so the spiders did it for them (I imagine it looked a lot like spun glass “angel hair” people used to put on their trees. Our spider is named Anansi after the spider of African folktales, the storyteller of the gods. Interestingly enough, the man who was in charge of retelling the Buddha’s teachings (a good choice since this man had a photographic memory) was named Anandi. Related? Well, as far as I know, he didn’t have 8 legs, but he did have a lot of cool stories to tell. Happy Bodhi Day, BTW. :)

I enjoyed reading the Legend of the spider. There was always tinsel to be hung on the tree but I never knew the meaning behind it. My tinsel definitely needs spiders now. Thanks so much for sharing the story and the instructions for the spider.
