Paper or Plastic?… Or Handmade?!!!

How many times have you gone to the grocery store for one item and the cashier asks “Paper or plastic?” Or you’ve walked into the local library to pick out one book and somehow you leave with a stack of books that you have a hard time balancing in your hands?
Today’s featured entries from my fall bag challenge I think are perfect carrying things of all sorts and sizes… tote bags! These bags are perfect for those trips that we all make to the grocery store or perhaps the local library to carry home a borrowed book or two. Perhaps some of these bags will inspire you to create bags of your own. Then the next time you head out to do a little shopping or pick up a few books at your local library for a little light reading and the clerk starts to put your items in a paper or plastic bag, you can proudly say: “No, thanks. I brought my own!”
School Bag for School Books created by Eve, Fiskateer #5012
This bag I created for my school books. I found it very hard carrying the heavy books home from school every day, so I decided that this bag would be for my books. I had a few things happen while I was sewing the bag. The needle broke, I tried another one but I bent that one. So the only thing that I had left to do was to hand stitch the tree and leaves onto the bag. That seemed to work fine until I took a close-up picture of the stitching. This is the first stitching that I have done in a long time, so I guess I couldn’t expect too much. LOL… oh well, in a few months I will have to make a new bag because I’m sure that I will wear this bag out!
(Eve used her favorite Fiskateer scissors to make this bag. The leaves and felt were new materials but she got the bag at a thrift shop!)
Library Bag, created by Glad, Fiskateer #5762
This is the bag that I made for the “Fall Bag” challenge. Since I needed a library bag anyway, I made a library bag! It was something that I’ve wanted to do but just never took the time. I made the bag from scratch using a tannish denim. I used my Fiskars rotary cutter and Fiskars cutting mat to cut the bag. I also used my very favorite scissors, which are the Fiskars Soft Touch Scissors to cut the apple applique. I didn’t use a pattern with this bag, it was made using only meaurements. Since quilting is another love of mine, I decided to go with the pineapple quilt block as my main decoration and since apples are my favorite fall thing, I added an apple applique to complete it! Most of the cottons that I used in the block are new, although some of the smaller pieces I got from my scrap quilting stash. I think I like how the end project turned out!
Sew Grateful Bag, created by Kimberly, Fiskateer #2494
I used Zombie’s Poochie Bag very easy pattern and some Sandy Gervais fabrics. I used my new Fiskars 24×36 folding mat, 45 mm Comfort Grip Rotary Cutter and Fiskars Razor Edged Soft Touch Scissors to complete this bag in one day! Fall is my favorite season and Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. My favorite fabric in this bag (the pocket) features gourds and pumpkins, my favorite seasonal food. This is the first bag I’ve ever made. Now I feel like I belong with all my sewing/quilting friends who have their own sewn bags!
Don’t you just love seeing all these bags? Well, guess what? (”What Wendy Jo?”) I’ve got more projects from this challenge to share with you, so be sure to check back tomorrow.

Glad, I love the quilting! I have to try the pineapple block someday, love it! And the colors make the apple really pop, love red/white/blue!

November 6th, 2009 at 11:55 amI’m loving these bags! Each is beautiful and they will be so useful! I’m guilty of having to choose paper or plastic at times because my library books and used paperbacks are in my reusable shopping bags, LOL! I know what kind of bag I need to make next.
