Meet Kathy Cano-Murillo… La Crafty Chica

My name is Kathy Cano-Murillo.  But you might know me better as La Crafty Chica!

chicastars.jpg

I’m all about crafting as a lifestyle. I make things centered around memories, people or events that make me happy.

My style is what I call a triple threat! Bright colors, lots of glitter and shiny varnish. I feel that this is also a metaphor for life!

I have five Chihuahuas at home and I collect these super cute Mexican doggie banks that look like Chihuahuas! I love them so much, I buy everyone that I see (I have dozens in my house!) and I decorate them.

This one I made as my Winter CHA mascot. She came with me everywhere! I would love to pass her on to someone else who wants to add a little kitschy sparkle to their life!

Peace, love and glitter!   -Kathy Cano-Murillo

From Lead Fiskateer Wendy Jo:  Thanks Kathy for putting a little sparkle into our day!  Be sure to click the link above to read a funny story about her “adopting” several Chihuahuas. It’s one of my favorite stories that she has written. So, it’s give-a-way time Fiskateers!  Kathy is giving her Chihuahua pictured above to a lucky Fiskateer.  And if that’s not enough, she’s traveling to her new home with some company… I’m tossing in a copy of Kathy’s latest book!

Do you love for Chihuahuas too?…  Maybe you have a fun and unique collection at home that you would like to tell us about…  Or perhaps you have a funny glitter story to share with us…  Or post a link to a photo in your Fiskateer gallery of a personal project that is similar to the Crafty Chica style…  We would love to see more than those simple “pick me!” comments.  Make your comment sparkle and shine!  Please don’t forget to leave your Fiskateer number in your comment.  We will select a lucky Fiskateer on Monday June 29th.

Edit:  Congrats to our random winner… Momma Liia #4695.  Please send your name and phone number to wendyjo@fiskateers.com to claim your prize.

I would love either as I love to sew too! The last big “glitter” project i did was for a custom wedding job. I had to make 15 paper crowns and by the end of it, I was done with glitter for a short time! Here is the blog post link showing each and every beautiful crown…

Here is a crown that I still have. I glittered almost every inch of it.

lastly…in 2007 I entered some items in the OC fair. Check out my rose scrapbox and crown. They both won ribbons and involved lots and lots of glitter.
Now days I use stickles more often as they are easier to control, but their drying time bites. I’ll be getting back into the loose goods come Halloween and Christmas!

A long time ago in crafty-land. Two scrappers were trying a new technique. These scrappers had everything worked out. It was a warm day and so their older kids were playing outside in the sprinkler and the kiddy pool, the babies were playing happily on the floor.

Since the kids were occupied these two happy crafters decided to try the skill of serendipity square making. Not necessarily a skill of great advancement, but a skill none the less. So these gals tore and pieced and glued.

Then these gals decided to emboss their sheet as well. One started to emboss while the other went to check on the kids. When she came back she commented on how hot it was in the room and flipped on the ceiling fan.

Well the fan stirred up the air but embossing powder is light so embossing powder went EVERYWHERE the table, the floor, the project and on one of the crafters. Realizing the error the fan was turned off.

They cleaned up their mess and finished their squares. After admiring their creation and discussing what to do with them, the one crafter looked up at the other and said “you have embossing powder in your hair”….

Heading to the bathroom to check out her self. Yup sure enough it was sparkly. So she went to shake off her head….it didn’t com off. She tried brushing her hair…some came off but not much.

You see what had happened dear friends, the day was really really warm (with no air conditioning) and so the embossing powder had fused to her scalp!

Our crafter now had a severe case of ’sparkle head’ her oldest DS commented that she looked weird. Her oldest DD thought the mommies were playing make-up and wanted to make her head sparkly too (that kid always did like glitz and bling!)

She had no time to think about it as it was now late. She had a few errands to run before getting home, packing up the kids, she hopped in the car to run her errands. The grocery store, the Lss…..

During her errands, she noticed the funny looks a few people gave her wondering why a 30 something mom of 3, dressed like she was heading to work in the garden was using body glitter on her head. The Lss owner (bless her heart) saw it however and laughed and commented “looks like you had fun”

We did have fun that day…granted it took 5 shampooings to get all the embossing powder off (translate out of the pores on) my scalp. So I was sparkly a few days. But we still laugh about that as one of our funnier craft mis-adventures. Betsy #2572

Well, I can’t resist a chance to show off my little Fiskateer in Fur:
    http://www.fiskateers.com/community/photo/43955/
He loves having his picture taken. If I try to take a picture of one of my other animals, he runs in and stands in front of the camera as if to say, “No! Me! You don’t want to look at them, you want me in the picture!”

I am not a big Chihuahua fan (although I do think they are super cute) but my daughters certainly are LOL The first webkinz that my DD asked for was a chihuahua and the second was… a little chihuahua. She even celebrated her birthday with Chihuahua movie :) The pink sparkly beauty should be perfect for her room. Hmmm, I probably should make her one. Let’s see if I can find anything on ebay…

I know I am late but I missed everything while out of town for three weeks and I just have to comment. Being Hispanic you just can’t live life without a crazy collection or two. Mine are all those crazy, little gifts you get when you go to a baby or wedding shower. I have some funky baby frames and vases and figurines. My mom collected them all my life…she has a room full in display at my childhood home. I just picked up the habit of keeping them. Only I married a very Caucasian man and he doesn’t want them displayed prominently. So they are in my room or the baby’s room…for some reason my older kids side with their father. I’d take a picture but they are pretty spread out. I’ll see if I can collect one or two of my favorite…they are pretty funky.

Crafty Chica rocks my socks! I know I’m too late to enter, but I just wanted to note that I’ve been a fan of her style since I saw her on the “glitter” message boards as far back as 2000-01? and I met her and she was as sweet as pie in person!
