A few weeks ago, I was at the “Tie One On” event in Dutch Flat and I had the most wonderful time meeting everyone there including Jenny Doh, the Editor-in-Chief & Director of Publishing of Stampington & Company. She was there to talk about Stampington’s latest publication, “Apronology” and I don’t think I’ll ever look at aprons the same way again (remember Wendy Jo blogging about this publication?). In fact, I was inspired enough to make my own apron. It was so easy- I simply embellished a cute tea towel with some red rick-rack, buttons, beads and ribbon, did a minimal amount of sewing and viola! I had made a cute, 50’s diner-inspired apron.
What about you? Are you an apronologist or would you like to be one? Was there a woman in your family who was known for wearing aprons all the time? Share your story, add a photo of your favorite apron, a photo of your favorite apron-wearing mentor, make an apron inspired craft and post it in the gallery or make your own apron to share. If you post a comment and/or post a link to something worthy of an apronologist (something like what Wendy Jo posted HERE after she read Apronology: http://www.fiskateers.com/blog/2009/03/21/my-favorite-aprons/, I’ll put your name into a drawing for a copy of Apronology signed by Jenny Doh for you to have as inspiration (and in the interest of full-disclosure, I’ll admit to thumbing through this magazine dozens of times before I actually part with it and send it to the winning Fiskateer!). I’ll also include a Fiskars Apron Lace Border Punch because it’s so appropriate for a papercrafting apronologist, don’t you think?
Post by this Thursday Sunday at 9 pm PST and I’ll add you to the drawing. This gives me a few more days to look through your magazine…

May 31st, 2009 at 5:55 pmOh Angela. Did I wear a apron, yes everyday at work. Nothing as “fine” as that one. But we must to protect our clothing from all the wonderful things my little friends, our preschoolers, might give us, such as leftover food from their hands. And others things. I am just going to say paint, but I am sure you can guess! heehee. It would be lovely to come to work with this wonderful creation of yours. It does have pockets, doesn’t it. Pockets are a must you know. I remember sewing class in 8th grade. We all make our own apron, to wear for cooking class. This shows how old I am!

May 31st, 2009 at 6:10 pmWhat a domestic diva you are with your apron. My mother, and my grandmother’s always wore aprons, and I still do too when cooking. In fact the only time I remember my grandma without an apron was when she got dressed up to go somewhere.yhey have a magazine just about aprons? That’s too funny.
Angela says:
May 31st, 2009 at 6:15 pmMerlene:It’s not just any magazine about aprons really- next time you’re at the bookstore, see if they have it in the art/craft magazine section. I bet you’ll be wearing an apron yourself in no time- they’re so LOVELY!
And Ms. Jackie: You’re right- no pockets. I’m thinking of how I can add one without covering up the little birdies on mine…

May 31st, 2009 at 6:21 pmMy grandmother always wore aprons. I really wish I had one of her aprons, but alas, I wasn’t around when they took apart her house and I am sure that my uncle threw them away. By the way your apron looks so very cute.

May 31st, 2009 at 6:30 pmoh this is fabulous…I have a collection of “old” aprons from my grandmother - I never once say her without an apron on. I cherish this collection and I am much too afraid to wear them - sadly they are currently in a storage unit - so I can not take a picture for you. I will have to try and come up with something crafty - just for this challenge.

May 31st, 2009 at 6:32 pmHow cute are you!?!? Love the apron! I actually just got my first sewing machine last week (for my birthday!) and aprons are on my ‘to learn how to sew’ list. In addition to sewing on my layouts, of course.
My Grandma ALWAYS used to wear aprons, so they make me smile to remember her. I was lucky enough to get one when she passed, it even has her Kleenex in the pocket.

May 31st, 2009 at 7:39 pmOhh love the apron! I actually have an apron story. There is a woman that used to go to our church her name is Miss Cricket. (That’s what she goes by) She is always baking for the church, pies, cakes, cookies she LOVES baking. Well she recently moved about 4 hours away, so all of the kids from kids church decorated an apron for her so they could be close to her while she was baking in her new home!
Here’s a pix’s of Miss Cricket and some of the kids that helped make the apron..

May 31st, 2009 at 7:51 pmI saw a cute apron thing online not long ago requiring minimal sewing and using ribbon and kitchen towels, but I have not mastered a seam yet so it will have to wait until someone comes to teach me. haha

May 31st, 2009 at 7:52 pmCute apron! I love the 50’s diner look.
My mother often wears an apron when she cooks & cleans. I would love to make some cute aprons for her (and myself although I don’t always wear aprons) but I’m not that handy with the sewing machine.

May 31st, 2009 at 8:23 pman apron is the first thing we had to make back in the home ec days - we did that so that we could use it when we were in the cooking section. But in never looked as good as this one. I have several aprons - for crafting ( and do wear them) and have been given some for cooking but never seem to remember to put it on when cooking. Pockets will be a great addition.

May 31st, 2009 at 8:30 pmMy great aunt always wore an apron. I remember every time we went and visited she would sit down in her favorite rocking chair and as she was sitting down she would wipe her hands on the apron she was wearing. When she passed away the family found drawer after drawer of them. Some were lacy and delicate and some she had made herself from old dish towels and gunny sacks. One of her favorite things to do was to sew. I sure wish I had one of those aprons today for the memories and to have something of her sewing work that she so loved.

May 31st, 2009 at 9:02 pmI wear aprons all the time, though I’m not required. I collect vintage aprons, and wear them crafting, teaching, and in the kitchen. I’d love to have a magazine about them and play with that new punch!
(I forgot my Fiskateer number! blurg)

P.S. Are you getting my emails?

May 31st, 2009 at 10:53 pmThanks for bring back a memory that I had not thought about in quite a while. Our family went to my grnadmother’s every Sunday for lunch. she always cooked with an apron. My papa worked at Martha White and htey had the flour sacks that people would make pillowcases, curtains, dishtowels and aprons from. they were cotton and flowered. She always wore one on Sunday. I still have a pillowcase. It is a treasured object.

June 1st, 2009 at 12:04 amI love aprons. My paternal grandmother ALWAYS wore one when she was at home. And, it was one she made herself. She made them for my mother, too. I have a few vintage aprons I’ve collected. Speaking of vintage, I’m of circa the same vintage as Ms. Jackie though I made my apron in 7th grade home ec. It was my first sewing project. We had to make it in gingham (I think so we’d have straight lines to guide our sewing)

June 1st, 2009 at 12:17 amMy Mom always wears an apron when she cooks, although not nearly as cute as the ones they have in that magazine, lol! I do have fond memories though of my Mom teaching me how to make homemade pizza dough and the both of us wearing aprons. Aprons just symbolize home and family to me.

June 1st, 2009 at 12:42 amYour apron is adorable. After my grandmother past away my dad found some amazing aprons that she had made and even entered into the county fair. She had kept the aprons neatly folded along with the awards that went with theam and a few newspaper articles talking about them. I know I will always treasure them as they show a very special side of her.

June 1st, 2009 at 3:20 amThe first person that came to mind for me was my Nana, she lived quite a way away from us so we only visited in holidays, she would get up before us everyday and make us breakfast in bed (in her apron’s), she always made toffee and home made choc and fudge for us - it was so much fun.
PS I have some material I am thinking of making into an apron so watch this space lol.

June 1st, 2009 at 10:22 amMy Grandmother-in-law made me a Christmas apron for a gift several years ago. I thanked her, but secretly thought it was a silly thing to make and give in this “modern day”. But the next Christmas I was making the holiday meal and put it on so I didn’t mess up my outfit. I loved it. I learned that not only was it practical but to appreciate that it was made by hand just for me. I wear it every Christmas and sometimes on Thanksgiving, too.

June 1st, 2009 at 12:38 pmI love aprons and now that I have a 5 year old daughter who loves to help everywhere (especially the kitchen) I am needing to make some updates to my apron wardrobe. I think it would be fun to make matching aprons for me and my daughter.
I was married almost seven years ago (in July). My birthday is in August and for my first birthday as a “married woman” I asked my husband for an apron. He was very surprised that I would ask for something like that and was thinking that people would get onto him if they heard that he bought me an apron for my birthday. I insisted that it was what I really wanted and he did end up getting me an apron (and also a lovely picture that still hangs in our home).

June 1st, 2009 at 12:39 pmTried to post last night and got booted when the power went out! Anyway, I made an apron just a week or so ago using some super cute Heidi Grace fabric and then scrapped a photo of it and used the Apron Lace punch! I am dying to read that magazine! (But scared it will make me an apron nut!)

June 1st, 2009 at 12:53 pmAt my quilt guild we had an ugly fabric contest! I received 1/4 yard of fabric that I am supposed to “quilt” with three other fabrics. The fabric I received is not so very ugly in my humble opinion and I cannot imagine it being a quilt but I can imagine that it will be an apron! The fabric is very 30’s and so I will make it into any apron and “quilt” some matching pot holders so I stay within the guidelines of the contest. The Apronology publication would really be an inspiration for me………hint, hint! I am going to go and post a pic of the fabrics I will be using so you too can imagine the apron regardless of the outcome of your drawing. Good luck to everyone and happy sewing!

No great stories that I can think of off the top of my head, but I do have a picture to show you. Your challenge made me sit down and make this apron that I’ve been wanting to make for a while now. It’s a unique one and didn’t take more than 10 minutes to make…look at the picture to see what I mean…

June 1st, 2009 at 8:13 pmI found a photo from Thanksgiving 1995. When I arrived at my mom’s house she had made aprons for herself, me, & my sister. She even made aprons for these birds she found for us to use as harvest decor. Like I said earlier, you will never see my mom in a kitchen without an apron on. Here’s the photo:

See my ORANGE clothespin apron! My granny made it for me many years ago, just like one she used. I happen to get a pic of hubby wearing it not long after we married, he was taking the laundry down off the line for me!
The other pic is of an apron that MIL made me as a shower gift. One of her wearing her own. My grandmas in one and some of mine hanging in the closet.
I couldn’t find a recent one of me.
Just added one of my kids I found in their Santa aprons!

Now to find the actual apron and see how close I am to the real thing!

I love vintage! As an avid collector of antiques & collectibles, I stumbled across this apron a few years ago. The neat thing about it is that Elmira is about a 1 hr + drive from where I live. I thought that the apron was pretty unique and had to add it to my collection of vintage kitchen goodies.
