Scissors, NASCAR and Sewing-How Do They Go Together?

As you may know, part of our trip last week involved a visit to Levine Children’s Hospital to sew pillowcases (see Angela’s post here).  What you may not know is that our visit to the hospital all started with a pair of scissors and a NASCAR race.  My husband, who happens to be a Jeff Gordon fan, was watching a NASCAR race a while back.  I happened to remark that the paint job on Jeff’s car looked like our beloved Up In Flames scissors, so I decided it would be a hoot if the folks in the Hendrick Motorsports offices had some scissors to match their car.  For those of you not familiar with NASCAR, Hendrick  fields the Jeff Gordon, Jimmy Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Mark Martin race teams.  I poked around on the Hendrick website, ended up chatting with the lovely Di, and off went some flame scissors.  While I was looking around on the Hendrick website, I noticed that Hendrick supported the Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.  That’s when I thought it would be cool if we could stop in there and sew some pillowcases with some of the kids.  I spoke with Di, told her my idea, and she put me in touch with the wonderful Pam H., who works with the Hendrick Marrow Foundation.   I explained the pillowcases and ConKerr Cancer to her,  she put me in touch with the hospital, and Voila!,  our visit was set.

We decided to thank Pam and Di in person, so on Wednesday morning we piled in the van and headed up to Charlotte.  Di was great, and we gave her some Fiskars goodies to share with some of the gals from the office.

We headed over to the one of the shop buildings, where we got to meet Shirley-what a sweetheart!  Shirley and her husband toured all over with one of the show cars for 11 years!

Then we met up with Pam and Courtney from the Hendrick Marrow Foundation.  They were gracious enough to give us a behind the scenes tour of both shops, and we passed out some heavy duty Fiskars scissors, more flame scissors and the skull scissors to the crews for the teams.

It was amazing how clean and meticulous the shops were!  We even got to go on Jeff Gordon’s transporter.

I’m afraid, however, we did a bad, bad thing while we were there-we introduced Pam and Courtney to the joy of Candy Cane Roca, hee hee!  Don’t worry, we left them with a bag, and hopefully it will hold them over for a few days.  Thanks so much Pam and Courtney, we really enjoyed ourselves!

It was a fantastic visit, all of the folks from Hendrick were so welcoming and friendly!  I think they’ve turned Angela, Cheryl, and Kelly Jo into NASCAR fans.  Ladies, start your engines!
