An Opportunity to Feed Our Community

Wow . . . the sock drive was so successful and we as a community were able to provide thousands of socks to the homeless to help keep their feet warm and healthy.  It was incredible to see the outpouring of your love and care fiskateers!  As well, Elena collected 696 Mother and Father’s Day cards for the troops and hundreds of layouts for Crystal.  What an incredibly giving fiskateer community.  You have such a huge heart!

Well, here is another opportunity for you to make a great impact on your community.  It’s a well needed one!  A food drive to feed the hungry.  I believe that you fiskateers can make a huge dent in the need to feed the hungry!

So from now until June 13th, the Charity Fiskamittee is going to be collecting and posing a challenge to each of you fiskateers to ‘feed our community.’  Here are the specifics . . .

  • As a fiskateer community we will gather food and other non-perishable items and donate them to our local community food banks.
  • The members of the charity fiskamittee will be setting up dates and locations where food can be donated.  We are hoping this will provide a great opportunity to meet with other fiskateers giving to the same cause and to connect.  If there isn’t a location near you . . . by all means, set up your own plan to do the collecting in your area and make the drop off to the food bank of your preference.
  • I know the economical crisis is hitting home for so many of us.  The Dollar Store is a great place to get canned foods and other items to donate.
  • For example, I will be sending out more details but I will be leading efforts to donate to the Orange County Rescue Mission which does a great deal of wonderful work here in Orange County.  I am hoping that on Saturday, June 13th I might be able to meet many of you fiskateers at the OC Rescue Mission (have to figure out details) and greet you as you drop off your donation.  http://www.rescuemission.org/
  • We will collect and attempt to have a meeting date/drop off date on Saturday, June 13th or otherwise specified.  There will be other dates and times you can also participate and donate . . . Maxine Hodges will be collecting during National Scrapbook Day, Sudie and Debby will collect during their SC crop in May.  There will be other opportunities as well.  Stay tuned here on the front side of the blog, the message board and the fiskateer calendar.
  • After speaking with a gal at the OC Rescue Mission she informed me that the biggest needs they are seeing at this time are the needs for non-perishable food items such as boxes of Mac n’ Cheese, canned food, cereal, spaghetti and tomato sauce, peanut butter, and pasta to name a few.  As well, there is a great need for formula, diapers and wipes (new) as these can be expensive items.
  • Feel free to collect a brown paper grocery bag and craft it to your heart’s delight with a personal message from you . . . as a fiskateer.  Then fill your bag full of groceries.  Check out the dates and times (as they are announced) and decide at which time you want to go and drop off your donation.

I attend Saddleback Church and a few weeks ago we did a similar food drive.  We were able to provide 8,000 bags of food for those that are hungry or going through a difficult time.  The church is now setting up their own food warehouse in order to continue to help meet those needs.

We as a Fiskateer community can also make a huge impact on our local community by ’sharing the Fiskars Love’ through tangible means of giving food.  So stay tuned for more information but start crafting and getting ready to feed our community.

Thanks for being you . . . you are a wonderful community that surely has a heart to give and make a difference.

We are bringing non-perishable items to the Wisconsin Fiskateer crop this weekend. We will be leaving them at the church and the church will deliver them to the local food bank in our community. Everyone has been asked to bring at least two items but I am hoping more than that will come in!

What a great cause. We donate to our local food bank on a regular basis. I’ll wait for more details and if there isn’t anything going on in my area I’ll set something up.

I live in a senior community and we have a box in the club house that gets full about once every three weeks. I believe that all is delivered to Brother Beno in the valley. That’s in Oceanside!

We’ve been working on our food pantry at our church during lent…We always plan on something the kids can do to be able to show them how we are suppose to help others…well…we have class every 2 weeks usually so we had 3 classes during lent…at our last meeting our director of religious ed and our pastor was so overwhelmed at how much food everyone brought especially during these tough times…we have sooo many people out of work in our community…my son also participated in the sandwich ministry in which once a month we get together and make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with juice boxes and individually packaged treats and then this company comes and collects them from all the churches in the area and goes to the inner city in chicago and passes them out to teens in the area…All the children learned how important this was to help our community and reach out to others!

Our church just finished 40 days of Community.
One of our reach out to the community project was a reverse offering. The offering went around and we pulled out a slip of paper and it had printed on it a suggestion of the kind of food you were to bring. This was very successful.

  14. Maxine Hodges says:

We are starting this weekend and not ending this campaign until June. This is an effort that anyone can participate in for very little cost, and yet have a big impact.

  15. Sondra #4936 says:

We have 2 great community service programs in our area that keep food bank and will be choosing one for the proceeds of the Fiska Rattle and Roll crop. I will be bringing my goods that day.

This is awesome! At Easter service, our church were collecting canned foods. It was awesome to see how something so small can make a big difference. I also coupon and it doesn’t cost that much to donate a few cans of food. If everyone did that, people would be so blessed!

  17. Elena Lai Etcheverry says:

this is sooo great! I can’t wait to see how much food we collect!

Here in Southern Illinois our food pantries are nearly empty. But they keep going with the donations that keep coming in. I too donate when possible and will do my best to gather donations to take to one of them. Thanks for the nudge to do more.
