Several of the fiskars design team members have agreed to be interviewed for the crop today! First up we hear from our newest member- Lisa Falduto.
Fiskars design team member since September 2008
Favorite Fiskars tool: Hmmm, this seems to change frequently for me. I guess my newly discovered Fiskars tool that I am loving is the Wire Winder. But in a couple of weeks I may have a completely different answer!
The best thing about being on the fiskars DT is getting to use great tools and consumable product to inspire other crafters!
Can be found most often crafting at anytime I feel inspired! (which happens to be a lot)
When I craft I like to eat chocolate (especially M&M’s because I don’t worry about getting my projects messy) and drink water.
I listen to nothing when crafting (unless one of my favorite TV shows is on)
I spend 25 hours a week crafting
When I’m not crafting I love spending time gardening, bargain shopping, and doing things with my family.
This is the special project I made for the Fiskateer crop! The candy dish is for Meliah’s Teachers for halloween (they have to get some goods too!) The treat bags will be for each child in her class……rotten mommy……….candy free! (You can see more detail photos + supply list on my blog!)
Where do you find inspiration?
My latest place to find inspiration is in the thrift store. Do you know how many interesting things you can find there? It is so much differently than walking the aisles in a department store because some treasures you find have been hanging around people’s houses for years and then there they are, not the norm you see everywhere else you go. Or sometimes they are hand made wooden items that are unique and there is history there and I get to add my history to it! It really excites me to find something unique like that to work with.
How did you get into crafting to begin with?
I grew up with two parents who were crafters! My mom must have tried every craft there is, seriously! She knits, crochets, quilts, does counted cross stitch, has painted, builds models, constructs doll houses, sews, etc. My dad has always enjoyed working with wood. He has always had a workshop full of power tools and has made lamps, furniture, shelves, etc. So I was surrounded by crafters growing up! I guess crafting has always been a natural part of who I am and who I continue to be.
What advice would you give to someone who was interested in working towards joining a Design Team, being published, etc. How to keep things original & not a copy of someone elses work?
I believe that in order to go down this path you have to have some concept of what your style is. You want to find a place where you “fit.” So once you have that established then you can search for a place that feels like home to you. My very first Design Team gig was for a kit club several years ago. I was a member of that club and told the owner that I had a goal of being on her team. I sent her some of my work and she said maybe in the future. Well, I waited two months and e-mailed her again letting her know of my interest and sending a couple new projects. She told me to e-mail again in a couple of months when she might be adding to the team. So I waited and sent her an e-mail in the timeframe she requested and she added me to the team. So I started at the kit club level and then continued to grow my skills and set my goals for companies that felt like home to me. Since then, I’ve done some Design Team calls, but almost all of the teams I have been on are because I set my sights on something that felt natural and like home to me and then I worked towards achieving that goal through proving myself through my work and showing a desire for serving on their team.
How is juggling everyday life and the surprises that come with it….and meeting deadlines for designing?
Well I tend to be an overachiever! I am a planner and a doer of things! Deadlines excite me and I plan for them in my life just like anything else that is important to me. Since I know life can be full of surprises I plan as far ahead as I can. So if I get a deadline that is two weeks out and I have time today, I start today. I normally complete all of my projects ahead of deadline, as a typical overachiever does! So then when life and surprises pop up, I do not have to stress that I am going to miss a deadline!
What is the average time that it takes you to create a scrapbook layout?
Ok, I am about to confess my paper crafting weakness to all of you! My strengths lie in altered items, cards, and mini albums. The area of paper crafting where I struggle the most are layouts. That doesn’t mean I cannot do a layout by any means, it just means that it takes me a whole lot of patience and time. So if the average designer creates a layout in 2 hours, it will quite likely take me 5-8 hours. At some point I want layouts to flow as easily to me as all of my other projects do!
Well, seeing as I only have a couple of projects on Fiskars Crafts so far here are the links!
