Another Sitcom Episode (Luck Triumphs over Disorganization)

For some reason I feel obligated to admit to all of you why last night, in the dark, at 8:30 pm, I was at my local post office, digging in the trash (and no, this was not a covert Fiskateer CIA mission. I wish).
Yesterday I finally found the salt and pepper shakers I have been admiring for years on sale. Score! I was in the middle of many frantic errands because we had company coming for dinner and I had a lot of boxes to mail at FedEx and the post office so I admit my attention to detail may have been off a little bit. By the time we got to the post office after lunch, Tabitha and I were done with all of my other errands and we had finished our fast food lunch (it’s not all Bento around here!) so I thought I would be tidy and toss our fast food bags in an empty shopping bag and throw it all away on the way into mail my last boxes. Later at home, I thought about those cute salt and pepper shakers and realized I hadn’t seen them since the store. *Gasp!* It dawned on me that I might have thrown the fast food trash in the shopping bags with the shakers!
After our company left, I insisted my dear husband drive me down to the post office so I could dig through the outside trash bins in the dark. Naturally a fashionable couple was in the post office box portion of the office (that part stays open 24 hours so people can access their mailboxes) and they exited just as I was up to my elbows in the trash can. Lovely. I decided to avoid eye contact and continue fishing until (eureka!) I found my treasures and skipped victoriously to the car (my husband, by the way, said it was ridiculous how joyful I looked at finding them as if I had really found a treasure rather than simply rescuing something I, myself, had carelessly thrown away).
My sitcom episode might have ended there if I hadn’t woken up this morning and decided to have my daughter wear the Halloween shirt I also bought yesterday. A police-style search yielded no shirt in the house or car either. *Gasp!* It had to be in that darned bag at the post office. If it hadn’t been so dark last night, I would have seen it. What choice did I have this morning but to drive BACK to the post office and ask, sheepishly, if the post office staff would look through the (now emptied) garbage in the back FOR me. Sigh. After two attempts at looking (they were half-hearted at first until I had to admit that I had intimate knowledge of what had been in the trash cans as of 8:30 pm the night before). Once again, luck triumphs over disorganization and the shirt was returned to us (although soaking wet because the post office employee said she felt compelled to rinse it before turning it over to us).
There you have it- another Angela Adventure. But really, when you see the shakers and the t-shirt (now drying on a sign outside), you must understand my determination to find them. Right? I am just sad that, once again, I had no camera crew following me about. At least I always have the consolation that my adventures might make a funny blog post…

October 3rd, 2008 at 5:22 pmOMGosh what a story! You have me lmbo but also feeling bad for you. Thanks for the roller coaster ride! Seriously. I am glad you got everything back. Now get some antibacterial on those salt and peppers shakers, lol!
Angela says:
October 3rd, 2008 at 5:25 pmHa ha. You are all making me feel better. Lorraine- the only reason I’ve never fished for a retainers is because I’ve never had one. Mostly I’m afraid I’m going to throw Zoila away. Let’s see, at $75 per visit for therapy… I think I owe a total of approx $525 up to Groovy Deborah’s comments.

October 3rd, 2008 at 6:26 pmYes you have outdone me because my venture into trash digging only took 1 trip. I met a friend at Buffalo’s one night for chips and spinach dip. The chips kept getting under my bottom plate, so I put a napkin to my mouth and stealthily removed them. I than sly tucked then into my pocketbook. I went to the bathroom and went home. About 2 hours later I realized-no bottom teeth. Hmm-not in pocketbook. Drove speedily back to restaurant and ran into the bathroom. Thankfully napkin complete with teeth was still in garbage.

October 3rd, 2008 at 6:44 pmCleaning up is not all that it is cracked up to be! See, if those Fast Food bags were still in the back floorboard of your card, you would have had more time to procrastinate or do something equally worthwhile.
I have had so many “sit com moments” I can identify with your adventure. I’m glad everything turned out A-OK. BTW, both purchases were well worth the “dive”. Cool shakers and I love the Hello Kitty Tee.

He was litterally dumpster diving for awhile unitl he decided that marriage isn’t built on the ring. He was one smelly mess!!! I never told him, but I wouldn’t have jumped in that dumpster for anything!!!!!

October 4th, 2008 at 9:39 pmThanks Lisa (and everyone)- glad I’m not the only trash digging Fisk-a-teer! Maxine- I would put on a snorkel jewelry. Especially a wedding ring- lol! And Lisa, if I DID get my own show and then won 2 Emmys for the show ((while I’m dreaming, right?), I would hold my Emmys up JUST like I held up those salt and pepper shakers after I found them in the trash- victoriously! HA HA!
