Pick a Color

“Pick a color.” That’s the phrase that I hear every other week when I walk into the doors of a local nail salon to get a pedicure. And for a creative artist like me, picking the perfect color is never easy. Sometimes I select a color based on my mood that day. Sometimes I pick a color just because of the crazy name of the color on the bottom of the bottle made me laugh. And yes, there have been times when I’ve reached for a bright shade of orange because a scrapbook convention or a crop is just days away… go ahead an giggle… I can’t be the only one who shows their Fiskateer pride from head to toe… can I?
If you’ve never treated yourself to a pedicure, you don’t know what you are missing. Spa experiences are usually very relaxing, but who says that they can’t be fun too? Usually when I go, I’ll take an old scrapbook magazine or idea book with me. I love to flip through the pages because I usually find something inspiring that I missed on the first read. But on Tuesday night this week I did something that I had not done before, I took my camera into the spa with me to capture the moment. As I started taking photos of my tired but pampered feet, one of the ladies sitting in the chair beside me started to ask me questions about my camera. Before I knew it, there I was, in of all places, in a nail salon introducing someone new to scrapbooking.
So, do you have a favorite polish color when you get a pedicure or manicure? How do you pick your nail polish colors? Perhaps you’ve never had a spa experience, and given the opportunity, what color polish would you select? Share your story and I’ll select a random reply this Sunday night to receive a surprise goodie box…and I’ll even toss in a new bottle of orange nail polish to make your toes happy too!

August 21st, 2008 at 5:42 amI thought I was the only crazy one to get a pedi every other week. I usually only pick one color for the pedi…and that is french…just b/c I love the clean look of it. Now my manicure…I am known to pick the color based on the season. This was a good read, WJ.

August 21st, 2008 at 7:46 amInteresting page. Never have had a pedicure. My sister and I like to yard sale. A few months back we bought a tote bag and found nail polish in it. A pale pink,a bright pink and a clear glitter. One rainy day a couple of weeks ago we got silly and painted our toe nails. It was great fun and nice to know we could still find the “kid” in us. We felt pretty jazzy in our sandals, too.

August 21st, 2008 at 8:00 amI don’t go offten enough, but when I do I always pick a fun color for my toes. Like coral or hot pink. I like to keep the fingers neutral for work so it’s fun to have that bright pop of color on my toes. If I really like the color I will buy it, too.

It had been on my “to do” list for about 2 weeks, I was so glad I finally made it. I pick my color by my mood and I love reading the names of the polish. Just had to share, though, that when I got married I painted my toenails blue. A deep, rich, sparkly blue. I had something old, something new, something borrowed… just needed the blue!

Seem to have a hard time spending on myself, when there are so many other things we need. What color would I pick? Maybe a bright red, or a dark purple. However my 8 year old daughter is into painting her nails both finger and toe red and black for the school colors. Hate to see what she will be like in high school if she is already this into it in elementary school.

She (dd) does hers in all sorts of colors/dots/stripes etc!

August 21st, 2008 at 8:28 amhad my 1st pedicure last summer before a major surgery….figured I wanted to have 1 part of me look good LOL! I usually go with a pink or rose color as I do wear sandals all the time but in a working atmospher you don’t want your toes to stick out & say “look at me”

August 21st, 2008 at 8:31 amI DO love the occasional pedicure! The whole experience is so relaxing and wonderful - I want it to last for hours. For me the polish on my toe nails is just the icing on the cake. My preference is Red, it works with everything & it is my fav color.

August 21st, 2008 at 8:55 amFor the summer, I get watermelon pedicures. They’re a red base with the “french” manicure part in sparkle and green. Then there are black dots for the watermelon seeds. My oldest sone (almost 2) loves it and that makes it even more fun!

August 21st, 2008 at 9:11 amI’ve had professional 3 pedicures in my life. The first one the lady made me bleed. The second one the lady tickled my feet (I’m VERY ticklish on my feet). THe last one was actually nice (french manicure style). Though because I tend to have so many feet issues, I tend to do my own and alternate between gold and silver hues and colors like pinks/reds. Love the idea of orange!

August 21st, 2008 at 9:13 amI’m another one of those who’s never had a pedicure, but I will occasionally polish my toenails. Personally I love nail polish but my fingernails are too weak to grow long so I almost never bother. And Wendy Jo I can just see my toenails in orange. lol

They truly are a treat when I get them and I spend a lot of time looking at all the colors before I pick one that’s just right. 
I tend to lean toward the red/dark pink shades…although Fiskars Orange would be a lot of fun!

I am in dire need of a pedi…and it’s more for the relaxation than for my piggy toes !!!

August 21st, 2008 at 10:18 amYou knwo its funny usually for my toes i go with BLUE, I don’t like to overwhelm my whole body with PINK shock LOL I do occasionally go brown, BUT last time….I was sitting there and that Nail lady talked me into the MOST fluorescent PINK polish ever! And she painted white flowers on the big toes and I like it! Pretty fun and different.
I do every color EXCEPT red!

August 21st, 2008 at 10:22 amI usually go with fun, bright pinks and reds on my toes in summer and more brown-reds and dark reds in the fall and winter. My nails I always do in light colors because they seem to show less of the chipping after a week.
Now you have reminded me I need to schedule a mani/pedi appt.

August 21st, 2008 at 10:24 amMy 86 year old grandmother and I have the same favorite color red — “I’m not really a waitress”!! I love a good pedicure! I especially like them when I am pregnant. It’s nice to have one part of your body that looks nice all the time!!

I have acrylic nails (on my hands), so I get them done every two weeks, and the hardest part is always picking the color. Last time I picked Bastille My Heart. This time I picked “Nomad’s Dream”. Dh always asks me the name of the color once I get home, because he enjoys the OPI names, too.
My favorite for Christmas is “I’m Not Really A Waitress”. I usually have a sparkly top coat put on that.

I normally just choose my colors by the season or sometimes I pick a color just to be funky .. like the teal I put on toes once. When I can’t decide I have a color that turns to a different color when you get cold

It was at a fancy spa/salon where we sat in padded chairs, drinking lattes, and laughing until we were almost crying. Coolest part- we were overlooking a beautiful courtyard and the ladies gave us a calf/ foot massage- weirdest- they put something in the water to draw toxins from your feet and the water turned murky- that came from me???
When I paint my toenails I love them to be a bright pink or orange so that I can look down at them and get a smile!

I love getting mani’s and pedi’s. It doesn’t happen often for me. When I paint my own nails I go for a color that’s between coral and pink. This summer my mother-in-law gave me a gc for a mani and pedi. She suggested getting a French Mani on my toes. Seemed to be the hottest trend. I tried and loved it!

I’ve been going to the same lady since 1995 and she STILL asks me to pick a color even though she knows that I always bring my own color and it’s always one of two colors - “OPI Red” or Cajun Shrimp. I don’t get pedicures very often, but a couple of weeks ago I was going out of town and wanted my toes to look nice. Part of that goal was to cover up the big black spot on my toenail from when I dropped my cell phone on my foot. Who knew it would make that big of a mark?! Anyway, I picked out a really cute color–kind of a shimmery pink. I wasn’t really paying attention, so I didn’t realize until it was too late, but the color was really transparent, so you could still see that spot on my big toe perfectly. Oops!

I tend to stick with soft colors, like light pink, white, soft fawn colors, the bravest I’v ever been is to paint my toenails dark red, and if I remember correctly I think I once tried dark purple, but probably ended up removing it. lol. Growing up my mom kind of frowned on things like, so I guess I kind of inherited those feelings, but I’m still all girl, and lov to paint my toenails.

I have been getting the Pink Breast Cancer Ribbon put on a toe, in support of my sister walking in the 3Day Walk here in Arizona. You would be surprised at how many people comment on it. When I do my own pedicure, I use a coral color. I had my colors done a long time ago, and was told that is a good color for me. I just can’t seem to get that out of my mind and go a little wild and crazy. I love the massage chair they use. You feel like your whole body is getting a treatment. I think I need to go and make an appointment!

Wendy Jo you are so right when you say “you don’t know what you are missing”. I keep telling my husband he needs to try it but he thinks it is for ladies only.
The spa where I go has “special names” (sport pedi and no polish pedi etc.) for mens pedicures but I haven’t convinced him yet!
Deep beige or wine are my favourite colors.

i usually try to match my toes best i can with my outfit if i am doing something special. Other than that, it just depends on my mood and what color i feel like wearing at the time.

I am drawn to browns! Love them! My fave is Chocolate Shakespeare (OPI). Today I had lunch with a sweet mentor who got back from her 50th HS reunion! Her nails looked wonderful! She got gels for the first time (I love the glossy look!) and she loved the name of her polish–”I Don’t Do Dishes.” LOL She’s a hoot!

We went the night before and the wedding wasn’t until 4:00 pm the next day, so I decided to go get a pedicure, which would be a first for me. I am so hooked! I always thought I had ugly feet, but I guess so does everyone else and I felt like a million bucks for the wedding! I chose a french pedicure.

When we go to the salon to get a pedi, we look at all the NEW polishes and we try to pick the one that has the most unusual name. That is the one we choose for our feet. Then we get to come home and tell the other what we picked, so that we can see who’s is the funniest or weirdest!

August 22nd, 2008 at 12:29 amI had gone to a Taste of Home Cooking class once and won a spa treatment, but I never did get to go. Life for us was extremely busy at that time and I never got it fit into my schedule. If I could have gone I would have picked a wild and crazy bold color(maybe a hot pink or red) just because it would have been a remembrance of my fun time there and something that I wouldn’t normally get to do.

August 22nd, 2008 at 1:13 amI, too, love “I’m Not a Waitress” red but often try strange colors. For a Holiday Brunch where our theme was “let it snow” I had the tips done in frosty blue and the nail in white. I’ve had pink on the nailbed and red on the tips.
Pedicures are the absolute best — just like your LO of your spa treatment!
I’m going to my 50th class reunion in two weeks with bright red nails and toes.

I do sometimes paint my nails and when I do I go for a dark red colour for some reason I love dark colours on my toes and light on my fingers.

August 22nd, 2008 at 8:43 amSometimes I would love to do colors and I look longingly at all the fun colors, but since I am not allowed to wear nail polish (religious reasons), I just go with a french manicure. I can’t stand my toes and the french manicure makes it look nice and goes with every outfit and every occasion. I also work construction so they stay hidden most of the time, but I like how it looks on the weekend in my flip flops. Makes me feel more feminine even though no one in the field can see me.

August 22nd, 2008 at 10:34 amOh, I love pedicures! It’s been forever since I’ve had one because I just can’t get past the cost. When I lived in Mexico, I had a pedicure every 3 weeks for $5.00 (US). Of course, that was expensive at the time, but when I returned to the United States, I found the going price was $25 - $35. True culture shock!
Oh well… If I could pick the perfect color this week, it’d have to be something in the coral line, for summertime.

It was one of the best gifts he’s come up with. It heats, vibrates on 2 speeds. So at the moment, I have on Raspberry ice. and will continue to use that gag gift weekly until the motor konks out.

August 22nd, 2008 at 12:58 pmPicking a color is hard for me… Since I am no good at decisions this is no exception, I will usually pick according to my mood or my manicurist will just pick one, I also will look at the names and if one jumps out I will pick that one also new selctions or special editions I will go for those too:o) I usually go with french manicure or clear for my nails and for my toes color color color!!! Your layout was so cute!!!! Makes me want to go get my toes done

August 22nd, 2008 at 1:14 pmI always get purple on my fingernails and my toes I do myself and they are usually maroon. Yes, I know they should match but I just can’t! The last time I got “new” nails put on I had purple glitter acrylic put on my tips. That looked pretty cool!

August 22nd, 2008 at 8:52 pmSeeing this post and reading everyones responses was fun. I just had both done today. I am one of those that goes every 2 weeks for my hands and once a month for the pedi. I love the reds and hot pinks. I also like to have fun and have had picturs painted on my nails for different holidays thought out the year. I am always looking for a new color as I love to be different. Today it is a hot pink for the hands and red for the toes. Don’t remember the names though sometimes that is what helps me decide if I can’t make up my mind. Also love the spa pedicure where my feet go into hot paraffin wax then sitting back to relax for 5-10 minutes before it is peeled away taking away all the dead skin. What a way to spend a Friday afternoon pampering yourself.

They have not been done in years…. only ever cut them once a week and that is it. Other than that my feet are neglected!

I was invited by one of my cousins who just had a baby and it was part of her “welcome wagon” she had a party at her home for herself and her friends..the ladies came out and did our hands, feet and face…OOOHHHH so much pampering 4 one day made me feel like a queen!! as for color I’ll go 4 a softer shade:)

August 23rd, 2008 at 4:26 pmOh I love pedi’s!!!!! But, I have 4 kids, so $$ gets tight. Basically I only get them on special occasions…i.e…the Christmas party for the hubs work. I usually go with a French tip when I get them done. But when I do them myself, they are either plain nude, or over the summer when the feet are tanned, I go with RED!!! But right now they are HOT PINK!! Because I always wear flip flops, and I started my Photography class at the college last Monday, and I wore a HOTT pink shirt, so I painted to match on my first day of college…{back to school after 8 years of being mommy was a bit intimidating, but SOOOOO good}!!
I’m sure I’ll change them soon…hopefully to ORANGE :]

August 24th, 2008 at 5:05 pmOh my…. you made me think back when the budget allowed for those trips to ge my nails and toes done…. sigh…I tend to pick colors that catch my eye that day. My toes will have a darker shade than my nails and I will usually let them put some kind of a design on them. My nails tend to be lighter colors. When I was lucky enough to find a light purple - lavender I would use that instead of the white of a french manicure. OK now I want to go have my nails done….. maybe next week. I do think that going with Fisakers orange for special events is a very cool idea.
