All or Nothing…

That is how I see events. You either do them right or not at all. Last night I was once again struck by the going half-way notion.
I was sooooo excited to be heading out to Hollywood Blvd. to see a sneak peek of the first two new episodes of the “Bill Engvall Show” and to meet Tim Meadows. Now, I admit, I don’t watch that show, but did check out an episode or two before going, so that I knew what I was going to see.
Hollywood Blvd. is way cool. It is what we Chicagoans like to call a “Brew and View.” While they show current movies, it isn’t your typical theater. You sit in nice desk/computer chairs (basically) at a table or ledge, order drinks and food, and eat and watch your movie. It is really a lot of fun and Matt and I have gone half a dozen times.
Last night, they had a nice little buffet for us of pizza, wings, and nachos, and my understanding now is that soda was included. The theater was less than half full and we got little goodie bags at our seats. I learned that most of the people had gotten tickets from a local south side country radio station that I don’t listen to. It was from 7:00-9:00, but other than getting seated and some food, nothing started until about 7:20/7:30.
Tim Meadows came out and introduced himself after the first episode was over. He talked for about two minutes and said he would be back at the end. And, he was. He did about 10-15 minutes of Q&A and then was done. At 8:30. He proceeds to the back of the room and begins to sign some autographs and smile for some pics. I waited a few minutes for the line to shorten and then got in line. Then, they cut it off. He had to leave - this was about 8:40.
So, here is my beef. Either do your event for 7-9, with stuff happening the whole time, make sure your “star” is able to make the commitment to be there or don’t do it at all. I left with a not-so-hot impression of Tim Meadows, the country music station, and just the whole experience in general.
Now, I realize it was a free event and that I am very blessed to have been invited, there is that word of mouth marketing part of me that was cringing by the end of the night. The episodes were cute, the environment was cool, but the crowd was dead and the time when the lights were on was pretty boring.
So, again I say, if you are going to do something, do it right and do it all the way. Sometimes less isn’t more, it is just less.
Okay… off my soapbox now. Also, thanks to the line getting cut off, I have no good pics and no autographed goodies to share, which was my plan! Anyway… TGIF!!!!

May 30th, 2008 at 11:57 amDang, that’s too bad, Steph! I don’t like half-done activities either. Do ‘em right and respect the people there to see the show or whatever it may be!

May 30th, 2008 at 10:16 pmI agree, and it is hard when someone you like disapoints you in person. Now will you enjoy watching the show as much? I know sometimes if I learn or see something that really turns me off about someone, it tends to affect how I feel about everything they do. Even though I still listen to the music or watch the show, that little something niggles me in the back of the mind. Oh well, live and learn.

May 30th, 2008 at 10:34 pmYes, I agree with you.
You should always give things you best shot so you do not look back with any regrets.

May 30th, 2008 at 10:36 pmSorry it wasn’t as great of an experience as you were hoping for. I too don’t understand when people don’t give 100%. Service means a lot - and the lack of it really shows!

May 31st, 2008 at 3:49 pmSorry that it didnt turn out like you wanted it to. I totally agree with you if you give your word about being somewhere for a certain amount of time, people are counting on you to keep your word. If you cannot commit for that long than be honest and tell everyone up front.

June 2nd, 2008 at 9:59 amBummer that was such a disappointment. It sounds like they had poor planning and didn’t put a lot of thought into it. I’m glad you Fiskateers and Fiskars have it together - you constantly create buzz, which I know is a major part of Fiskateers’ purpose, but you also foster a community.

June 2nd, 2008 at 10:19 amWe had a movie place like that in Richmond a loooong time ago and it was so much fun!

June 3rd, 2008 at 8:51 amSorry that it didn’t work out for you, and I feel like I would’ve had the same disappointed reaction.
I also thought the name of that theater sounded familiar & I realized it was right by where I went to the Wilton cake decorating school last summer.
