Well, some of you may know that I wasn’t able to film Fiskars tv this past CHA due to illness. I did however have something ready to share with you so instead of sharing it on Fiskars tv . . . I thought I’d share with you here. I’m hoping it will inspire you to decorate your own home using wonderful tools from Fiskars.
A few months back we moved into a new home. Our decor is a bit Tuscany mixed with a bit ‘art deco’. Well, I wanted some new framed artwork in our home however it can be very expensive. I love fine art but I also wanted it to be personal. Well, I thought about doing my own. I found that it’s easy, inexpensive, personalized, warm and you get to use your Fiskars tools. I used my squeeze punch . . . one shape in two sizes.
Here’s a little how to:
Supplies needed:
Fiskars Trimmer
Cardstock - in desired colors
Applicable Embellishments
Fiskars Tape Runner
Two Fiskars Punch - one shape, two sizes - in this case “Too Hip to Be Square”
First, you decide on a topic . . . little girl, baby, newly married couple . . . I chose family.
- Jot down, brainstorm and then print words on a plain sheet of paper things that deal with that topic. For example, a baby girl theme . . . you could use words such as new, girl, pink, precious, soft, hope. Keep in mind the size of your font, how big you want your framed artwork. I usually print out the words first to make sure they will fit within the frame of the squeeze punch (see below). Make adjustments as necessary. I used words such as . . . 1 Princess . . . + . . . 2 Parents . . . = . . . The Waters. Also, ‘thankful’, ‘well traveled’, ‘patriotic’, ‘meet us at the beach’, ’creative’, ‘outdoors’, ‘laughter’, ’esta. 1991′, ’believers’, ’family time’, ’2 turtles, 1 hermit crab and 1 bearded dragon, ‘creative’, and ‘fisk-a-family’ to name a several.
- Choose the colors you’d like your framed artwork to be. I chose neutrals since my bedroom and living room are in those colors. If you’re doing a canvas/framed piece with a baby girl theme in mind you can use different shades of pink or pastels.
- Then you create your pattern (as little or as much of a pattern as you’d like) by using the larger squeeze punch to mat the back of your descriptive words. I’m using “Too Hip To Be Square” but you could pick any of the fun shapes and sizes of squeeze punches. Then punch out your words.
- Next cut just under 2 inch squares to mat the larger shape and arrange them on a framed canvas (which will run you about $4 - this size).
- Once you have your pattern combination laid out, adhere the patterned paper with a Fiskars tape runner. Add details such as charms, stickers, lace, or fabric. I even used Fiskars 3-D foam dots to pop up the center which says love! You can Modge Podge the exterior as well to give it a more artsy finish.
So there you have it . . . easy, inexpensive and personalized artwork.
Happy Crafting!

March 10th, 2008 at 12:21 pmvery nice art work and what a wonderful way to add a personal touch to your home!! I dont have any shape punches yet because I think that I should use the shape cutter instead of a punch because I already have all the shape cutter templates but I am really tempted to get me some punches as they are so quick and easy to use!!

March 10th, 2008 at 6:35 pmThis is such a lovely project Cheryl. I’m a big fan of personalized artwork in a home. I think surrounding yourself with items that have a story is so much more meaningful than a pre-framed decorative piece.
