More Christmas in July

‘Oh Holy Night’ is my favorite Christmas song, followed by “Little Drummer Boy.”  And most specifically my favorite song is ‘God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen’ by the Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan (I am very impressed, Diana.)  So if you responded to the blog with any of those songs, you know who you are, send me your address so I can get your prizes out to you- holly@fiskateers.com.

My favorite Christmas present ever was probably two years ago when my husband agreed (finally) to let me have another puppy - we had just gotten one a month or so earlier, so being able to get another so quickly, he was anti-dog in the beginning, was a great gift!

  2. Sarah says:

The best Christmas present I have ever recieved was a plaque my husband and son made with both of their handprints when my son was 3 months old…they have done it for me every year since and they all hang in my office.

  3. Sandy2 says:

My best Christmas present is just being able to spend time with my family.

  4. Laura says:

Other than my favorite “late” christmas gift..(My first born son, Bryan, was born on New Years Day!!)..it would have to be from the Christmas of 1972. I asked for a new Bible with my whole name on it with a bible stand so I could leave my bible open to the 9th chapter of Genesis while I slept….My mom just thought for a very long time, saying nothing, and finally spoks, saying..”Really?…That’s all you want for Christmas?” I said..Yes, Mom…that’s all I really want”. I have 10 brother and 1 sister and this was a first for her…of all the things I could have asked for at 15 years of age! I got up Christmas morning….watched all the younger kids open hectically (I was the oldest and wrapped a lot of gifts)…the littlest ones so excited showing me, their big sister, what Santa had brought them, and opening my gifts slowly (Traditionally, I had my 3 gifts waiting…to make the excitement last.)Opening the first, then second, then third…and no Bible. I was disappointed, but I knew Mom didn’t drive so she went shopping when Dad or one of her friends could take her and specifically going to purchase an engraved Bible would have been a unique trip.
After the gifts were all open…after the paper cleaned up…after breakfast and the younger kids were happily playing with their new gifts, Mom and her cup of coffee came into my bedroom with a gift in her hands…closed the door and handed it to me…Saying “Merry Christmas, Laura”. I opened the box, and there was my bible, with my full name on it in scrolled gold letters, and the most beautiful carved Bible stand I had seen! I cried, knowing that she made arrangements to specially going to get this for me…and waiting so I could open it, alone with her…was the BEST Christmas gift I had ever gotten. That beautiful bible and stand are on my dresser to this day.

The best gift that I’ve received is the gift of having my entire immediate family together on the actual holiday. It’s a hard gift to give to each other each year. With sisters that live several hours away, and two of us have jobs in retail so we both usually work the day before and after the holiday. Just a quite day together are the gifts that I remember and look forward to the most.

  6. Lynda #1749 says:

Best Christmas present received were the keys to our house…we moved in the Saturday before Christmas 10 years ago this year! What a wonderful thing to celebrate each year!

  7. Erin says:

My best Christmas gift would have to be when I got married last year! It was after Christmas (the 30th) but my hubby was a wonderful gift! :)
Spending another special day with my great-grandmother would also have to be a wonderful Christmas gift. She is 95 & I love being able to enjoy time with her.

  8. Amy Haskedakes says:

My parents gave me a very sentimental gift 2 years ago. When I was younger they took me to see a movie, “Savanah Smiles”, it became my favorite movie ever. They purchased it for me so that I could watch it at home and I did all the time growing up, crying every time at the same part. Well two years ago they searched for months trying to find this movie (it is no longer on video as the star died and the parents removed the rights for release). They found it at a small video store in south Florida and drove all the way to get it. I was so excited and touched to get it for Christmas that I cried, just like I used to at the movie. I have since made my hubby watch it several times, he doesn’t enjoy it as much as I do LOL.
I always felt like I related to the movie a bit. I had 2 sets of parents the entire time growing up, two that weren’t very interested in me and two that I was their world. Although this little girl was kidnapped in the movie, sort of, I always could understand how she wanted to stay with them rather than her parents.

  9. Sandy Wilkins says:

Wow Laura… what a special memory. The year I got my 12 string guitar was the year I remember most. It was unbelievably expensive and I wanted it sooooo much. Yes, I still have it and play.

  10. Jennifer #1626 says:

    Laura…what a wonderful Christmas story!

Well, I was going to say that my best Christmas present ever was my wedding ring. But, after reading the others, I would have to say that having my family all together on Christmas is the best present. We’ve been fortunate to have always been together (the 5 of us) on Christmas day, despite crazy work hours, and despite a 3000-mile difference between our oldest son and the rest of us.

  11. Laura says:

    I have many favorite gifts

when I was young my parents would get me a very special toy every year…my favorite though was my easy bake oven…Still have it in the attic somewhere!

As an adult though my Christmas got better!!! My husband proposed to me in front of my family (after asking my dad weeks before for my hand in marriage) when the last present was opened and inside was a cute Yeti and on his finger was my engagement ring. When I looked up, with tears in my eyes my dh was on his knee telling how complete I make him and how much he loves me and asking me to be his wife. We both shed tears of joy and of course I said yes.

A few years later our second ds was born on Dec 22nd and was very small for a full term baby - only a little over 5 pounds and we were allowed to come home on Christmas eve.

Christmas holds many outstanding memories for me.

  12. Vicki says:

My very favorite Christmas Gift was 1988 when we had just been in our new house for 6 months. My husband had set out the Santa gifts for the kids while I loaded them in the car to go off to the grandparents house. When we returned home a couple of days later ‘Santa’ had left me a garage door opener. The 13 years we lived in that house I LOVED that opener. On rainy or cold days I appreciated it SO MUCH. We didn’t have much money in those days and we still talk about what a wonderful Christmas it was. Good times!

  13. Brenmarie says:

My Favorite Christmas Present has to be my very first Fiskar tools. I got the Fiskar sewing scissors and micro tip scissor from two different people Christmas 2005. I was so happy that I didn’t know where to put them so that they wouldn’t get lost in all the Christmas wrap.

One other one was to have my now brother-in-law from Alberta come out to our place to spend Christmas with us. My sisters and I made him a few presents. A story book on how he meet my sister, a Weeding favor that had July, 2004 on it. We didn’t know that they would get married on July 4, 2004. The Joke was on us at that one!

  14. stefany says:

My youngest son was 3, and he had been sick the whole week of christmas. His regular pediatrician was out of town and I had to take him to the emergency room. He was having severe stomach pains and they sent him home three days in a row, saying it was gas!! I knew that wasnt right, so on our fourth trip, Christmas eve, a new doctor saw him and what had happened was his small intestine had wrapped into his large intestine and was now in his stomach!! So this doctor rushed him into surgery and finally fixed it. Later that night He was up being his sweet little self and I got my baby saved! Even though we spent xmas in the hospital that year, that was the best present ever, knowing my child was ok and healthy!!

  15. Kelly Jo says:

Holly, this is so nice of you. I have learned so much about my fellow Fiskateers (favorite Christmas songs and now favorite Christmas present). This give-away is a great way to get people to share.
My favorite gift…my late dog, Roc. I got him for Christmas ‘94 and he passed away in ‘05. I still miss him, especially around Christmas.
On Christmas Eve, he always knew something was up and would sleep under his Christmas stocking hanging on the mantle. He was just like a little kid on Christmas morning, emptying out his stocking and playing with his new toys. He was my special friend during a trying part of my life and I am forever grateful for him.

  16. Jenifer Cowles says:

I got married on the 16th it was close enough to christmas so That was the best christmas ever.

  17. Barbara says:

Christmas was always really special at our home - I remember every year I was just in awe because my mother had chosen the perfect gift. It wasn’t expensive, but always reflected my interests at the time. She had six young children and it meant so much to know that she really payed attention to me and what I loved!

  18. Mandiannie says:

It was Christmas 2003. I still remember it because it was the Christmas that my fiance spent with my family. Nobody knew at the time that we were engaged..We had been engaged since June but had kept it between us two. We had been going out for 4 years and the fact that he was there was special because he was from Alberta and I was from Manitoba and spending Christmas together was a special bonus. All my sister were getting an upright suitcase, a small one for those overnight trips (I knew cause I was the one who wrapped them…) and I BADLY wanted one too. So when it came tome to unwrap the presents and Mom gave me mine I was disappointed. The package was too small to be a suitcase. I opened it and pretended I was thrilled with what was inside…which happened to be a set of silverware (she must have guessed that there was a wedding coming up the following summer) I was sitting there feeling bitterly disappointed when all of a sudden my fiance handed me a HUGE package. I was utterly surprised and when I opened it and saw that it was not only a small upright suitcase, but the whole set I was so excited that I didn’t know what to do! It was one of the most memorable Christmas’ in my life and one that I won’t soon forget.

Oh, and then there was the case of my sisters… the had packaged a little surprise for me and my fiance. They made us open it together inside was a “our first Christmas together” ornament… a mock Wedding favor… a teddy that talked when you pressed it’s hand (one of those that you could record with the message that you wanted and they had recorded “When’s the Wedding?”) and last but defiantly not least they had created a book of how we met. It was a cartoon style with clip art bodies and our head put on top and was soooo funny. We laughed so hard and it turned out to be one Christmas that we’ll never forget.

  19. Laurie R. says:

The best presents I have ever recieved is the things my kids made when they were little. They are now adults, and I love to admire ornaments as I take them out. Or the things we have hanging on the wall. They keep saying they don’t need to be there. But I disagree. Ü

  20. Joan says:

The best christmas present that I ever got was car starter for my car so that I could start the car from inside the house.

  21. Bethany says:

The very first year that I moved out on my own, my parents moved to Ontario, and I moved to BC (to stay closer to my someday husband). Anyway, Thanksgiving, I got one of those little chicken’s from the store and ate that by myself. Any other holidays, I spent by myself. I was very (*VERY*) depressed to think of Christmas by myself (Christmas is, to me, the most wonderful holiday in existence!!) In mid-November, my husband (then boyfriend) called, and said that his parents had decided to have me for Christmas. And they did…and treated me like family! It was incredible, and I believe that that Christmas, even more than when we got married, was when I became a part of the family. I have been every Christmas since besides one (we couldn’t get flown back to Washington State from Texas), and every year is just that much more bonding, and being with family…we should be purchasing our tickets to take our new daughter (their first grand-daughter) this year, and my family will be making the trip down (now that they’ve moved to BC, as well–also their first grandkid). So, should be exciting.

Sorry about the novel, this was just something that was an incredibly important moment in the relationship between me and my in-laws.

  22. Geraldine says:

The best christmas present that I ever got for christmas was a ring that has all the birth stones of the family in it.

  23. Erin G. says:

My favorite Christmas gift was hidden in a horrible experience! My fiance and I were on our way to Christmas Eve at his grandpa’s house and my car broke down! We were stranded in a scary part of town, and had to call a tow truck. It took us all the way to my mom’s house (2 1/2 hours away) and then we were stuck there for an extra three days. That was wonderful in the end, getting three extra days with my family and my fiance!

  24. Rachel Greig says:

When I traveled through Europe for 12 months in 1996/97 I spent Christmas with friends in Switzerland. The best present I ever received was a parcel from home that had messages and cards from all of my family and friends! Along with recent photos of them all too :) It really made my day!

  25. Inge says:

Laura, this is such a beautiful story. I got tears in my eyes while reading it! This is a memory you may never forget! I don’t want to participate in this Rak. Laura should win this!!! Greetings from Belgium!

  26. Jessica Sim says:

My best christmas present was my computer! I am on it all the time! I could not live without it!!

  27. Michele L says:

I’m like you Holly…the best Christmas gift I have ever gotten was my engagement ring. DH proposed right in front of his two sons. And, he was down on one knee! I was totally elated but also so imoressed as DH is such a rugged manly man. Who would of ever thought DH would have proposed this way!

  28. Jennifer C says:

the best christmas present i ever received was my digital camera from my husband. considering how important pictures are to me —it was a wonderful gift!!

  29. Kim says:

Years ago I thought the best gift was my children and my grandchildren.Don’t get me wrong -they still are my top priorities. But in 2003 my husband was diagnosed with throat cancer. He went through helacious treatments and surgery and in November he was well on the road to recovery. My Mom passed away the first week in December which was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to go through. In some ways it was the worst Christmas after losing Mom but knowing that my husband was going to make it made it the best Christmas ever.Mom was so happy to know that he was getting better before she died.(Love you Mom).

  30. Lyn Dwyer says:

Having my family all here last Christmas Eve was the best Christmas present for me as my Dad passed away a month ago and at least we were all home here for his last Christmas. Now two of my sons are working overseas and won’t be home this Christmas…..so I really treasure last year’s family Christmas Eve dinner…..here.I’m not looking forward to this Christmas….too many family members will be absent.

  31. melita says:

Great Christmas songs! I don’t remember have a specific fave Christmas gift…just love it when we get together with the whole family, which doesn’t happen that often anymore since we are spread across the US, but we are trying to make it happen this Dec!

  32. Michelle M says:

The best gift I ever received was a bike that my dad built and painted for me. It was in the early 70’s. He bought it at a swapmeet, striped it and painted it Candy Apple Green. He replaced just about every part. Got me a banana seat, sissy bar and even a basket. Everything I wanted and it was built with love.

  33. Bianca says:

I would have to say my favorite present was last year when I got to be home for Christmas. My DH and I moved from Iowa to Arizona almost 6 years ago now and we had never been back for the holidays since we had moved. Last year we decided to go back and spend the holidays with family. We both got to be with each family for the time we celebrate. It was the best gift I could ever get. I was able to spend time with family and I got to bake bread with my dad which I have pics of.

  34. Veronica says:

That is SO hard to choose. A few years ago, my great uncle had a box arrive ON Christmas morning, which was exciting enough. I opened it and it was an extremely rare Robert Frost chapbook that the poet had made as a Christmas gift only for his friends. As a writer, to not only have something so incredibly rare and historic, but to be trusted with something so valuable by my great uncle was unbelievable. I still pull it out of its protective plastic and look through it, amazed that it’s mine.

  35. Cherie says:

My best gift was from my husband it was a calendar he had made up for me with a picture of my dog Misty & myself. I had Misty for 14 years and she died in a freak accident 3 months before we got married (she was going to be my flower girl) Since I was unable to have a child of my own Misty was the child I was not able to conceive. That calendar was just the most beautiful present I have ever received and 10 years later I still have it and will always cherish it.

  36. Jen B #258 says:

I got married 10 years ago 4 days before Christmas. Its fun to celebrate our anniversary at Christmas time.

  37. Julie says:

Oh!!! An engagement ring! NOW THAT’S a fabulous gift!!! I have an extremely special favorite gift that also has to do with a wedding. When I first got married, I couldn’t leave the states for 6 months (I’m Canadian). First Christmas married and I wasn’t going to be able to be with my family at all. I’d ALWAYS spent my Christmas’ with my entire family. So, this was HARD for me to say the least. I was with my new ‘family’ and that was good but my Mum, knowing that I was going to be struggling ’slipped’ in a special gift that I didn’t know about. It was all the professional wedding photos that I wanted but I didn’t get!!! We had purchase A LOT but it’s so hard to leave ANY behind! Especially when you love photography like I do! So, it was neat as well because the photos included my family and it was like they were right there with me!

  38. Thien-Kim says:

My best early Christmas present is my daughter, Sophia. She was born early November, and she made it the best Christmas every!

  39. Valerie Williams says:

What came to my mind was an organizer Bible that I really wanted and it had to be ordered and I didn’t think my husband would get it for me and he did and I remember it really meant alot to me that he took the trouble to get what I really wanted.

  40. Greta #1374 says:

First and foremost I’d have to say Jesus Christ is my favorite gift. Much more fullfilling, rewarding, and everlasting that any material item could ever think of being. Secondly, I’d have to say memories stand out more so than any one gift. Not to say that I haven’t received anything wonderful, but when I think about it, my mind goes back to memories instead of gifts.

  41. Merlene says:

My best gift was being able to spend Christmas with my mother and entire family last year. My mother passed away unexpectedly two days after Christmas. What a blessing to have those special memories and of course wonderful pictures.

  42. Robin says:

My favorite Christmas Gift was when I was about 10 years old. (Dang, that was about 33 years ago! Yikes!) I got a little round red transister radio. I just LOVED it. I would listen to it while I got ready for school in the morning. I thought it was the BEST! Something like that now probably cost about $5. I don’t know how much it cost back then, but I do know it was a sacrifice for my parents to get it for me.

  43. Hisaho says:

I think the best Christmas gift was having my in-laws take the family to Williamsburg, VA for their spectacular Christmas celebration back in 1994 (the year after my husband and I were married). We had the joy of announcing my pregnancy on Xmas Eve and seeing everyone’s surprised faces.

  44. Rae says:

A very special Xmas gift was from my hubby (just my boyfriend at that time)the first Xmas we spent together. He gave me a $200 gift certificate to the mall. Now you might think that was a very impersonal gift but for me what it signified was that he really “got me”…I love to shop, its fun for me…I would have loved any gift he gave me but the fact that he knew that I would just be thrilled to wander through the mall with this certificate burning a hole in my pocket thrilled me. I didn’t always have much money to spend on frivolous things at that time so that was a lot of moola to me. I couldn’t wait for Boxing Day so I could head out and buy some special treasures with this certificate. I thought that he was going to be “the one” during the months leading up to Xmas but I knew for sure after that and this year will be our 10th anniversary and we’re still going strong! BTW, I’ve never gotten another gift certificate from him but now he asks for a list of items I’d like and he picks certain ones so I know I’ll get the things I really want but just don’t know which ones until the day I open them. I smile to myself whenever I rememember that first Xmas together.

  45. Kate says:

My mum was quite poorly one year (she fell and broke her ankle) so to keep herself busy she made us all presents. I had a velvet scarf and matching hair scrunchie. I still have the scarf and it is very dear to me.

  46. Nic #1033 says:

the best gift I ever got was the year I was pregnant with my eldest - 1993. We had next to no money to spare, all our spare $$ had gone to buying a pushchair, a cot, and all the things a new baby needs. Baby was due 2nd Jan, but my doctor told me the size I was he’d likely come in time for Christmas. With money so tight, and with labour imminent I could not do much, but I could sit and do crosswords and word puzzles. Craig bought me a thesaurus and wrote the most loving things in the front - yes it likely cost only $20 but I still treasure it. And for the record the baby waited till the 16th of January!!

  47. Gabby #2140 says:

I don’t think that I have a favorite christmas present per say. I have a favorite Christmas… the year before I found out that the presents were coming from my parents. Waking up at 6:00 in the morning waking everybody up to open presents! That was fun… At our house we went to sleep with an empty tree and woke up to a tree full of presents… loved it!!

As far as presents themselves…. can’t really think of any of them that stand out…

  48. emily says:

My best gift was delivering my twins safe and healthy just a few days before my 32nd birthday. The following christmas my husband gave me a sweet charm braclet that had a charm for each baby, and a heart for us.

  49. Joan says:

The best gift that I ever received for christmas was a charm holder in the shape of a butterfly and it was on a chain. You put charmrs on it.It was given to me by my mother.

  50. patti davis smith says:

I suppose my favorite memory of my childhood Christmas presents was my “big bicycle”. My dad had just had surgery and they told me Santa might not be able to bring my bike that year and surprise on Christmas morning there it was. I was in the 3rd grade…(eons ago!!!)

  51. Kelly Muir says:

the best christmas present I have had, was in 2003 finding out I was pregnant with baby No 2! Little did we know that 10 weeks later I would find out I was pregnant with TWINS!!!!!!

  52. Frances says:

The best present I’ve ever received was from my husband. When he proposed he had his brother sneak around and take pictures of us while I was going on my goose chase. Afterwards they all convinced me that no one took any pictures..:( but then Kyle made me a custom floating glass frame with all his favorite pictures from the proposal. I cried so hard! I love it!

  53. Michelle Dort says:

One year for Christmas I got a yummy, fuzzy, warm fleece robe from my son. It was so perfect and so thoughtful, I still use it today!

  54. Bonnie Weiss says:

My favourite Christmas gift was my very first camera. My husband bought it for me and I used it so much, for so many years that I wore it out. Then he bought me another one just before our son was born. Everytime I use my camera to capture special moments, I think of my hubby and just how special HE is.

  55. Kay Brown says:

We lost our daughter when she was 18. Her favorite cologne was Cool Water. One of the things I missed was her beautiful smell. A few years after her death my husband gave me a bottle of Cool Water! It makes me cry remembering the moment I opened it up. The memories came rushing back and it was if I was holding her once more.

  56. Vanessa Baker says:

My favortie christmas gift comes every year. By tradition, my inlaws get us each (my husband daughters and I) a new ornament. The girls get barbie, my husband gets Star Wars or some other super hero and I get Raggedy Ann and Andy. I love opening them each year…it is exciting to try and guess what ornament we got!!!

  57. Steph says:

mine is named Adara my dd she desided to show up early on 12/02 but she is still the best gift i could have ever recived…
