~ 1970 Something ~

I loved the comments you made on the blog post/contest ‘Just Have Fun.’  You really did . . . I loved to hear the toys you played with, the things you did and the fun you had ‘being a kid’.

Your comments brought back some good memories of things I did when I was younger.  I love getting those warm fuzzies.

One of the things I used to love to do as a kid is that I loved playing with my Spirograph.  Well, I think I’m going to start using my Spirograph and add it to my collection of scrapping tools.  I think it would be a fun addition with all the fun colors and shapes that are so ‘trendy’ in scrapbooking right now.

~ Spirograph ~

Here are some other things (I received in an email) that brought back some warm fuzzies.  Hopefully some of you can relate . . . (I am the oldest of the first four Fiskateers you know).  So much good clean fun back then . . . 1970 something.  You know you were a little girl in 1970 something if . . .

  • You owned a bicycle with a banana seat and a plastic basket with flowers on it.
  • You learned to skate with actual skates (not roller blades) and your hang out was the roller rink.
  • You had nightmares watching Fantasy Island.
  • Your Holly Hobbie sleeping bag was your most prized possession.
  • You had the Donnie and Marie dolls with those pink and purple satiny shreeded outfits or owned the Sunshine Family.
  • You spent hours in your backyard on your metal swing set with the trapeze.  The swingset tipped over at least once.
  • You wanted to be Laura Ingalls Wilder really bad and wore that Little House on the Prairie-inspired plaid, ruffle shirt with the high neck at least once for your school picture.
  • Your hairstyle was described as having ‘wings’ or ‘feathers’ and you kept it ‘pretty’.
  • You liked Bo and Luke (’Dukes of Hazard’) or Ponch and John (Chips).
  • You had Stars Wars Action Figures (by the way I just sold mine on Ebay and one of them was rare . . . I got $115 for that one alone)
  • You bought Tiger Beat or Dynamite and hung up posters of Shaun Cassidy, Leif Garrett or David Cassidy in your room.
  • You loved crafting with Shrinky Dinks.
  • You drowned yourself in Love’s Baby Soft - which was the first ‘real’ perfume you ever owned.
  • You glopped your lips in Strawberry Roll-on lip-gloss till it almost dripped off.

What wonderful memories and when I get my Spirograph I’m going to do a layout remembering all these things.  I’m so grateful to my parents for allowing me to have these wonderful memories . . . I can look back and smile.

Have a great day and Happy Crafting whether you’re using ink, fingerpaints, glitter, construction paper . . . whatever . . . “Just Have Fun!”  I’ll choose the winner later today and post it soon.

  2. Mary Mc says:

  3. Kim S says:

I remember a lot of those items as well (If only I invested all the money I spent on Tiger Beat or Dream beat-I would be a millionaire LOL)
I was most impressed that you still have your spirograph–I guess you knew you’d need it again someday. I remember a light box that I had- I could have used that, but I didn’t keep it. I had to go out an buy a new one. Great trip down memory lane!!

  4. suzanne says:

Fun stuff! I do remember that strawberry lip gloss, and my poster…well, you forgot a biggie…Andy Gibb!

  5. Lori says:

Well I wasn’t a teen during the 70’s but a little girl for part of it and I do remember some of these things. We watched Dukes of Hazard regularily. My sister had Holly Hobbie (it was much to girly a toy for this tom boy).

  6. Shirley says:

Cheryl, I know those spirographs were your best gifts. And, even when you were younger, you were creating original things on the Lite Brites. You use to spend hours doing that as a child. After that, all we had to do was give you a drawing pad and some colored pencils and you would draw anything and everything just from looking at a picture. We knew from the beginning you were destined to be creative, and now we are seeing it in Abby, as she can take nothing and make in to something really cute. You’ve been a great influence on her talent. Mom

  7. Amyre says:

Well, I could relate to all those 1970 something! I was at a garage sale the other day and say a set of Spirograph, now I wish I would have bought it. It did however look back fondly at the “good ol days”.

This is so funny! It really brings back memories. I haven’t thought of shrinky dinks in a long time. Thanks for sharing. I may have to do a layout also or at least use these on a page of my childhood.

  10. Debbie Buckland says:

wow I should have kept my spirograph and all my starwars toys. And my wonder woman doll! I was born in 1972 and remember most of those things you listed.

    As well as…
    Cabbage patch dolls
    strawberry shortcake dolls

both of which are back in vogue!! scarey.

And don’t forget about Fraggle Rock!!! The very best puppet show ever!!!

  11. Linda A. (elendae) says:

I have to laugh at the “Loves Baby Soft” one - that was “my” scent for the longest time! Do you remember the Loves Soft lemon scent that came out in the mid 70’s? I loved that one too. Every time I was my dishes with my “Joy” dishwashing liquid, I think of that old perfume. Wonder what it means that I liked to smell like clean dishes when I was a teenager? Do you remember “Heaven Scent”? That was another one I used to look forward to at Christmas time. :)

  12. melita says:

ROFL! I can relate to so many things on your list! I remember the Spirograph…no clue what happened to ours…my sister and I spent hours arguing, I mean taking turns, over who got to use it and for how long! =)

  13. erin yamabe says:

  14. Wendy Jo says:

I have to ask…Are you that little voice I’m always hearing in my head?…it all seems like yesterday. Thank you so much for the 70’s flash back. Not only did I have the Donnie & Marie dolls, but I had the Cher doll too. (Her clothes were always to big to trade with other Barbie size dolls. LOL!) But I have to ask about one thing you missed..What 8-track tapes did you own? (Oh, goodness, I just had a thought that I might have to explain myself to the younger Fiskateers what those were! Argh!!)

  15. Yessica says:

Cheryl - I so totally remember most of the things you listed. I not only had Donnie and Marie Osmond in there pink and purple outfits, but I also had Sonny and Cher. I also remember having the Spirograph and I also had a Lemon Twist, I’m not sure if anyone else remembers it, I can’t seem so find anyone else that had one besides my sister and I. Oh what wonderful memories!!! Thanks so much for bringing them back!

  16. Cherie says:

The Spirograph what memories I never owned one as a child but I had family memebers that let me have a blast when I visited - it was really alot of fun. LOL on the Love’s Baby Soft it was really nice but can you imagine being in a room with a group of us all wearing it…. oh our poor school teachers. I am going to tickle some memeories on this one does anyone remember Gee My Hair Smells Terrific? or Tickle Deodorant that was another fav with teens in my area. Cheryl thanks for stirring up old memories.

  17. Maria says:

OH my gosh! Everything you wrote is soooooooo true - Too funny! :)

  18. Stephanie C says:

OH too funny!!! I remember all of these…except the swing…I spent my time hiding in a tree to get away from my brothers hehe.

  19. Leslie says:

:) I just stepped on a spirograph wheel that my kids didn’t put away last weekend! Ouch. Almost as bad as stepping on those darn Barbie shoes or Legos!!

The thing I’m missing about my extensive 70’s Spirograph collection are the awesome pens that came with it! That hot pink one was to die for. Unfortunately, they are LONG gone, and I just can’t find one that works as well! What are you using to create your masterpieces?

  20. Wendy Jo says:

Yessica- Oh my gaud! The lemon twist! (aka the hula hoop for the ankle) The ultimate outside toy! I would skip up and down my street for hours with playing with that toy while listening to my transister radio. Matter of fact, I used to get “rub burns” around my ankles that would last for days! I seem to remember some other company coming up with a knock-off toy with a counter attached to it too. My little sister was crazy about her plastic Big Wheel trike. (Why do I have a strange feeling that this blog may just go on forever?)

  21. Bonnie Hollaway says:

Wow, the 70s!!! I got married in 1974 - but I do remember so much of what was on your list of 1970 warm fuzzies!!! Funny how the trends continue to cycle - strrawberry shortcake has come & gone several times, same with cabbage patch dolls, & Holly Hobbie!!! OMG, I loved Tiger Beat & always wore Heaven Scent!!! Thanks for the flash back!!!

  22. Lisa M. Pace says:

Gosh I could relate to every single thing on this list. Thanks for bringing back lots of memories… some I had forgotten.

  23. Cecilia says:

I remember all of that…drippy lip gloss…but JT was my dream boat, Barbarino….and I still swoon over him now! Can’t wait to see the Wild Hog’s movie (I think that’s the name!)

  24. Jacqui says:

Boy…you’ve nailed it with your list! Dynamite magazine….my best friend and I made a club based on that magazine…just for the two of us.

Donnie & Marie dolls & show…yup…still have them with their pink/purple outfits and microphones. Donnie with his all-in-one bodysuit!

Thanks for taking me down memory lane!
