Angela Daniels: new year’s resolution

Hello to all my fellow Fiskateers! I couldn’t be more excited to be a guest blogger! I have been thinking of what project to share with everyone and realized that what I really want to share is one of my New Year’s resolutions instead.
I’m sure I’m not alone as the Crafter (capital “C”) in my circle of family and friends. My sister-in-law scraps too but not to the extent that I take it. Frankly, everyone thinks I’m a little obsessed around here. What this means during the year is I find myself feeling a bit of pressure to remember birthdays- not with an E-mail or a phone call, but with a pretty, handmade card. Hallmark just isn’t an option once someone catches a glimpse of the piles of goodies I have in my stash.
I’m going to let you in on my terrible secret: I RARELY send birthday cards. Or any cards, for that matter. I have made the task seem too daunting. I want my cards to be too fabulous, too labor intensive. Just thinking about making them reminds me of any good book I might have waiting for me on my nightstand. Every year, in the final hour, I manage to put together Christmas cards because I feel I must but that’s usually the extent of my card sending efforts. And would you believe that sometimes I make cards that I spend so much time on, I can’t bare to part with them? I put them in page protectors and admire them for a bit and then forget I have them!
This brings me to my New Year’s resolution. As I worked on my Christmas cards this (late) December, I vowed to be better with remembering birthdays with a card. I am promising myself to let go of the idea of the perfect card, the 2 hour card, the card with $10 worth of embellishments. They just don’t get made and, if they do, they just don’t get sent. To get me started on my resolution, I created a simple but elegant (I think) Christmas card using Heidi Grace’s Sugar Plum line. I chose this line not only because I’m a huge Heidi Grace fan but because the paper doesn’t scream Christmas. It has a nice, understated elegance that I decided might be versatile enough to put me on the path to being a thoughtful friend, not only at Christmas but all year round.
So the official resolution is this: I will send birthday cards to friends and family this year. How I plan to achieve this goal is simple. Each time I create a layout or project, I will use the scraps to create simple cards- BEFORE I clean up. As you can see, I’m already working on my goal by taking my Christmas card scraps and turning them into simple birthday cards for January. My aunt Ellen (Jan, 22nd) and nephew Jacob (Jan 27th) will be surprised, don’t you think?
Happy New Year, Fiskateers!

December 29th, 2006 at 8:10 pmHappy New Year to you too. Great to meet you.
I do the same thing you do!!! Keep my favourite cards to oggle at for a while…..
I usually use my left over scrap stuff for cards and found objects around home like - christmas paper, ribbons, found buttons, netting that come around fruit from the supermarket etc.

December 29th, 2006 at 8:22 pmI like to make cards while I have all my stuff out. I have a card organizer box and just slide them in so they are ready when I need them

December 29th, 2006 at 10:41 pmWhat a great New Years Resolution! This year I think I am going to do the same as well as make sure I mail gifts at least a week before B-Days to make sure they arrive BEFORE the B-Day…. what a concept… right? I think I am going to try and make sure that I have the cards ready the month ahead. So that means I need to get going as I have three B-days within the first 10 days of Jan. and then 6 in Feb!!! I’m off to my craft room. Thanks so much for the kick in the pants!!! I needed it.
LOL

December 30th, 2006 at 11:19 amThis is a great idea, and a great resolution. I managed to make and send a few cards last year but not for everybody. I guess I better get started though ’cause I have 3 birthdays coming up in January and my own but for that one I’m not making a card, I’m going scrapping.
